Idea for a major project.

For my 'media project 2' module, I want to explore theme of addiction. Addiction has many sides; different causes and effects. According to Borole (2021), it pertains to a compulsive act, thought or behavior repeated for the harmful yet gratifying reward. As a person gets addicted to a substance or a behavior, the brain access the pleasure from that it again and again. This happens due to intense stimulation of the reward system in the brain. Addiction affects your mind and body as well as social standing. People who suffer from addiction are usually labeled 'junkeys' or they are seen as no good. Rarely do people wonder why did a person go down the path of self-destruction.

'An addiction can be a way of blocking out difficult issues. Unemployment nad poverty can trigger addiction, along with stress and emotional or professional pressure' (Addiction: what is it?, 2021)

Not only does addiction have an effect on the person who is suffering from it but also, on his relatives and friends. As I grow up in a small village in a time of recession, where many families suffered from alcoholism and other substances abuse I can relate with Murray (2019) who explains that the effect of drug and alcohol addiction is both short and long term. Loving homes can be stained. Conflict becomes normal, trust begins to erode. Marriages can collapse. Communication becomes more difficult.

I'm not quite sure from what perspective I want to approach this theme. To get a better grasp of the 'addiction' theme in literature and to inform my own work I started to explore writers who wrote about it. There are two authors that came to mind; Anton Chekhov and F.Scott Fitzgerald as they both touched on themes of addiction.

  1. Always try to make your blog posts more visual if possible. For example, you mention a couple of writers who you want to research so you missed an opportunity to hyperlink directly to their work etc, or include the image of their work.
